What are the recommended acts of wudu?

The following are the recommended acts of wudu. That is, if they are performed, one gets rewards; if they are not performed, there is no punishment or blaming.

1 – To stand on a high place while making wudu in order to be protected from the splashing of water.

2 – To turn toward the qiblah while making wudu.

3 – Not to ask for help from anyone while making wudu except for those who need help due to an illness, disability  etc that makes it necessary to ask for the help of others. It is permissible if someone helps another while making wudu without asking for help. As a matter of fact, it is written in hadith books that some of the Companions poured water from a pitcher for the Messenger of Allah while he was making wudu– though he did not ask – and received his supplication. It shows that it is permissible to accept the volunteer help of others like preparing water for wudu and pouring water.

4 – Not to talk while making wudu unless it is necessary. To say prayers.

5 – To intend to make wudu both through the heart and the tongue.

6 – To utter basmala separately while washing each organ and say the prayers of wudu. If a person does not know those prayers, he can say salawat for the Prophet...

* * *

Once the Messenger of Allah saw Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, one of the Companions, making wudu by pouring a lot of water and said to him:

– Why do you waste so much water? Sa’d asked in surprise,

– Is wasting in question in making wudu, O Messenger of Allah?

Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah said to Sa’d:

– Yes, even when you make wudu by a river, wasting is in question if you use too much water...” (Ibn Majah)

7 – To move the ring on the finger so that water will penetrate under.

8 – To put water into the mouth and nose by using the right hand...

9 – To use the left hand to remove the water from the nose.

10 – Not to use too much or too little water while making wudu. That is, not to waste and not to cut down on water...

11 – To make wudu before the time for the prayer starts in order to be ready for worshipping and to try to have wudu at all times.

It is mentioned in a hadith that angels continuously ask for the forgiveness of those who always have wudu and who always go to bed having wudu.

It is stated that seven features appear in a person who always has wudu:

* Angels attend his religious talks.

* The pen always records rewards for him.

* All of the organs of that person glorify Allah.

* He always goes to mosque and performs prayers in congregation.

* Angels protect him from the harmful things that might harm him in the darkness.

* His death will be easy during the throes of death.

* He will be under the protection and security of God Almighty.

12 – To make wudu though one has wudu... It is stated in a hadith that if a person makes wudu though he has wudu, he will be given ten rewards.

13 – To utter kalima ash-shahadah while standing toward the Kaaba and to say prayers as follows:

“Allahumma’j’alni minattawwabina wa’j’alni mina’l-mutatahhirin” (O Allah! make me among your slaves that repent and reach material and spiritual cleanliness.)

14 – Some scholars regard it as makruh to use the water that is heated under the sun in metal containers. If it is not harmful to the health, it is not makruh.

15 – To fill the pitcher for the next wudu after making wudu, not leaving the pitcher empty... It will cause Satan to lose hope according to what is said.

16 – To read the chapter al-Qadr three times after uttering kalima ash-shahada.

17 – To exaggerate while washing the arms, face and feet. That is, to wash the arms up to the shoulders, to wash the feet up to the knees and to wash the face down to the neck. The reason for the exaggeration is that the faces and wudu organs of the ummah of Muhammad will be bright and luminous. Therefore, it is recommended in a hadith to exaggerate while washing the organs of wudu:

“My ummah will definitely appear with luminous faces and white organs of wudu as a sign of wudu. Try to lengthen the brightness and whiteness.”

18 – To perform two rak’ahs of supererogatory prayer after each wudu if it is not time of karahah.
