The emigrant: Saarah (Pbuh)

Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, emigrated in the cause of Allaah The Almighty with her husband and her husband’s nephew Loote (Loot), may Allaah exalt their mention, to Palestine.

When there was a terrible drought in Palestine, she traveled with her husband once again to Egypt. Information about them was quickly conveyed to the Pharaoh of Egypt who ordered his guards to tell him about every beautiful woman entering Egypt. One day his soldiers told him that a beautiful woman had arrived in Egypt (i.e. Saarah), so when ‘Ibraaheem (Abraham), may Allaah exalt his mention, came to know about that, he said to his wife, “If he (i.e. Pharaoh) learns that you are my wife, he will take you from me by force. Therefore, if he asks you who you are, tell him that you are my sister. You are my sister in Islam, since I do not know of anyone in this land who is Muslim except you and me.”

Pharaoh asked his soldiers to bring the woman to him, and when Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, arrived at his palace, she invoked Allaah The Almighty not to let her down, and to protect her from Pharaoh’s evil. She made ablution and prayed, saying,“O Allaah. You know that I have believed in You and Your messenger, and made my body unlawful for everyone except my husband, so do not let this polytheist harm me.”Allaah The Almighty answered the supplication of His believing worshipper and, consequently, paralyzed the hand of Pharaoh when he wanted to extend it to her with an evil intention.

Pharaoh asked her to supplicate her Lord to enable him to recover  from paralysis and he would not harm her in return. Therefore, Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, supplicated Allaah The Almighty, who answered her supplication, and thus, Pharaoh’s hand turned as healthy as it was before. Again, he wanted to extend his hand with evil to her, but it was paralyzed, so he asked Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, to invoke Allaah The Almighty to cure his hand and he would not harm her in return. She supplicated Allaah The Almighty, and He answered her supplication. However, Pharaoh broke his promise yet again, and his hand was paralyzed for a third time. Hence, he asked her to invoke her Lord to remove the paralysis from his hand and he vowed not to breach his promise and that he would not harm her. She supplicated Allaah The Almighty and Pharaoh’s hand returned to the normal state. Pharaoh said to the one who brought her, “Take her away, since [the one] you brought [is] no human.”He ordered for a maidservant, Haajar, may Allaah exalt her mention, to be given to her, and allowed her to emigrate from his land in peace.

’Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, and his wife returned to Palestine once again, and Loote, may Allaah exalt his mention, pursued his journey to Sadoom and ‘Amoorah (present-day Jordan) to invite their people to worship Allaah The Almighty and to warn them not to act in defiance and disobedience to the laws of Allaah The Almighty.

Days and years passed and Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, remained without a child, who would be a source of joy for ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention,  and a support in their old age to them. It saddened her that she was barren and could not bear children. Once her maidservant Haajar, may Allaah exalt her mention, came to offer her some water, and after looking closely at her, Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, found that she was suitable to grant her to ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention. She hesitated to do so out of fear that her husband would become aloof from her and pay greater attention to his new wife. However, after a while the whispers of Satan subsided because she realized that ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, was a true believer who would continue to live equitably with her in good companionship and thus, would not change towards her.

‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, married Haajar, may Allaah exalt her mention. Observing the signs of pregnancy on Haajar, Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, felt some jealousy, and after Haajar, may Allaah exalt her mention, gave birth to Ismaa‘eel (Ishmael), may Allaah exalt his mention, Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, asked ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, to take Haajar, may Allaah exalt her mention, and her son away.

In order for the decree that Allaah The Almighty had willed to come to pass,‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, took Haajar, may Allaah exalt her mentionand their child to an uncultivated valley in Makkah  next to the Sacred House of Allaah. He left them in such a place as a trust with Allaah The Almighty and supplicated Him to protect and bless them, saying (what means): {Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.} [Quran 14:37]

As the divine signs are endless, Allaah The Almighty willed that another sign should take place. One day a group of visitors called on ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, who hospitably ordered a fat calf to be slaughtered, and he served it to them. He was astonished when they did not eat. The visitors were actually a group of angels who came to ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, in merchants’ apparel. They greeted him with peace and he answered their greeting. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

·        {And certainly did Our messengers come to 'Ibraaheem with good tidings; they said, “Peace.” He said, “Peace,” and did not delay in bringing [them] a roasted calf. But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them and felt from them apprehension. They said, “Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Lot.”} [Quran 11:69-70]

·        {And when the fright had left ‘Ibraheem (Abraham, may Allaah exalt his mention) and the good tidings had reached him, he began to argue with Us concerning the people of Lot. Indeed, 'Ibraaheem was forbearing, grieving and [frequently] returning [to Allaah].} [Quran 11:74-75]

The angels told ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, that they would go to the people of Loote, may Allaah exalt his mention, for they disobeyed Loote, may Allaah exalt his mention, and did not follow him.

Before leaving ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, the angels gave glad tidings to him that his wife, Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, would give birth to Is-haaq (Isaac), may Allaah exalt his mention, and that the child would grow up, get married, and would be blessed with Ya‘qoob (Jacob), may Allaah exalt his mention.

When Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, heard that, she was amazed and overjoyed. She expressed her joy and astonishment like most women do and exclaimed, marveling at what she heard. She said (what means): {“Woe to me! Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!” They said, “Are you amazed at the decree of Allaah? May the mercy of Allaah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He Is praiseworthy and honorable.”} [Quran 11:72-73]

Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, became pregnant with Is-haaq, may Allaah exalt his mention, and gave birth to him, and Allaah blessed him for both her and her husband. From Is-haaq, may Allaah exalt his mention, came the descendants of the Children of Israel.

This is Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, the wife of Prophet ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, who was the first woman to believe in the Father of the Prophets, ‘Ibraaheem, may Allaah exalt his mention, when Allaah The Almighty sent him to his people to guide them to the right path. His nephew Loote, may Allaah exalt his mention, believed in him. At one point in time, the three of them were the only believers on earth. It is said that Saarah, may Allaah exalt her mention, died when she was one hundred and twenty-seven years of age.

Lessons from the unblemished life of Maryam

Maryam (Mary) the daughter of ‘Imraan (Amram), may Allaah exalt her mention, is a bright image of chastity and purity. She guarded her chastity and the result was {…so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel} [Quran 66:12] Why did Allaah The Almighty choose her from among all other women? That is because she{…believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.} [Quran 66:12]

Dear Muslim sisters, please do not say, “I am not Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, nor do I belong to the family of ‘Imraan, nor have I descended from the Messengers that I will be as chaste and pure as Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention. I am not the recipient of miracles like the supernatural miracles she witnessed.” Instead, you can say, “Why do I not take Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, as an example?” Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {There was certainly in their stories a lesson.} [Quran 12:111]
Dear Muslim sisters, we are living in the age of science and technology that has no room for supernatural events. However, through our minds we can deduce and understand why Allaah The Almighty selected Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, to be the recipient of that supernatural and lasting miracle, to be the mother of ‘Eesaa (Jesus), the Messenger of Allaah.

Come with me to trace back the threads of this story – the story of the chastity of Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, the daughter of ‘Imraan:

·        The mother of Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, Hannah (Anne) the wife of ‘Imraan (Amram), was pious and grateful. When Allaah The Almighty blessed her with pregnancy, she thanked Him in a special way. She pledged her unborn baby to the service of the Sacred House to worship Allaah The Almighty therein. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Mention, O Muhammad], when the wife of ‘Imraan said, “My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.”}[Quran 3:35]

This indicates that choosing a righteous wife is the prerequisite for having righteous children as manifested by the mother of Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention,  who was a righteous wife and, therefore, Allaah The Almighty blessed her with a righteous daughter, Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention.
·        When Hannah gave birth, she discovered that it was a female baby although she had desired it to be male to serve the House of Allaah and worship Allaah The Almighty therein. It was, however, the will of Allaah The Almighty that it would be a female. Hannah took the baby in the cradle to the mosque in fulfillment of her promise that she had made when the baby was still a fetus in her womb. The result was: {So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zakariyya (Zechariah). Every time Zakariyya entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, “O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?” She said, “It is from Allaah. Indeed, Allaah provides for whom He wills without account.”} [Quran 3:37]
Exalted You Are, my Lord. How merciful You Are! You Are more Merciful to the baby than her mother is to her.
Sisters, do not say, “How can I find a husband when I am wearing the Hijaab (Islamic covering)? Who will propose to me if I do not apply make-up?”
No, by Allaah. Be truthful and sincere to Allaah The Almighty and He will provide you from where you did not imagine. Your chastity, Hijaab, and modesty will definitely bring you the righteous husband you deserve. Wearing scanty clothes, applying make-up, being immodest, and imitating "liberated" Eastern or Western women does not serve your purpose.
This is not a supernatural fact. Rather, it is the experience of many girls other than Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, the daughter of ‘Imraan. Consequently, maintaining your chastity, Hijaab and modesty is the reason for being blessed with marriage, attaining a state of tranquility, and acquiring real, pure, and clean enjoyment.
·        What was Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention,  like when she became mature?
She kept to a corner in her chamber praying, supplicating Allaah The Almighty, serving the House of Allaah The Almighty, adhering to her Hijaab and maintaining her modesty. Therefore, she received consecutive calls from the angels directing her to increase her devotions by kneeling and prostrating in prayer to Allaah The Almighty, and telling her that Allaah The Almighty had selected her above the women of the worlds. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And [mention] when the angels said, “O Mary, indeed Allaah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer].”} [Quran 3:42-43]
Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, was worthy of being selected by Allaah The Almighty. Why? Because:
·        She was pledged to the service of the House of Allaah The Almighty from the time she was a fetus, and such sincere intention from her mother was sufficient for her to be accepted.
·        She was pure, chaste, and modest.
·        She was a devout worshipper and a dweller in the mosque.
·        She was not inclined to having friends and male admirers like other women. She did not know what sins were. She only knew her chamber of prayer and the Hijaab she adhered to.
·        She is a timeless example of a woman who deserves to be selected over the women of the worlds.
Let us identify the reasons for the elevated rank of Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, which are neither extraordinary nor exclusive to Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, but can be attained by all Muslim women, so that Allaah The Almighty will select you from among all girls and bless you with a good husband, a beautiful residence, and true love. These reasons are: prayer, chastity, and Hijaab. You do not have to search for a mosque to be like Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, but you can do righteous deeds, which are varied and many. Allaah The Almighty accepts from the sincere person even an atom’s weight of deeds, and our chief aim is chastity.
Here is a scene of chastity embodied in the words of the Quran. Although the scene is very old, the words of the Quran make it come alive as if it were taking place right before our eyes:
While Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, is in her private apartment, the Angel enters upon her in the form of a well-proportioned man, so she feels disturbed and trembles and seeks refuge in Allaah The Almighty. {She said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allaah.”}[Quran 19:18] The Angel explains to her the task he has to undertake, and she rejects the idea that she may bear a child. {She said, “How can I have a child when no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?”} [Quran 19:20] The Angel tells her that it is a Divine decree and no one can repel it.
It is a natural disposition in girls that they guard their chastity, and this is in no way exclusive to Maryam, the daughter of ‘Imraan, may Allaah exalt her mention.
When she felt the fetus moving inside her womb, she would suffer anguish; and when she was in labor, she regretted her situation bitterly, saying {Oh, I wish I had died before this and was oblivion, forgotten.} [Quran 19:23] As chaste and pure as she was, she wished she were dead owing to the allegation of a sin that she did not commit,  although she knew that it was the will of Allaah The Almighty.
Conversely, modern girls surrender their chastity without a sense of shame, some of them even boast about their "liberation" from social and religious norms, pride themselves on their impudence, and imitate Western girls in everything -- even in losing their virginity. In the eyes of some misguided Muslim girls, "liberation" becomes synonymous with having several boyfriends and with the freedom to indulge in fornication. Thus, chastity and modesty are removed and replaced with shamelessness and guarding one's chastity becomes a form of "backwardness". Contrast this with Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, who wished for death to overtake her for something she did not commit other than complying with the will of her Lord, motivated by her sense of purity and chastity.
The characteristics of chastity and purity are not exclusive to Maryam, the daughter of ‘Imraan, may Allaah exalt her mention. Chastity is the most precious asset of a Muslim woman, and honor is the most valuable thing owned by her. Women who preserve their chastity are dignified, proud, tranquil, and self-confident. In addition, Allaah The Almighty will bless them with righteous husbands and give them the best reward for their good deeds. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Is the reward for good [anything] but good?} [Quran 55:60]
On the contrary, girls who lose their chastity have no sense of stability or a tranquil life. They are neither self-confident nor do they have self-respect. Rather, they are distracted, lost, and displeased with life. They deserve what Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And whoever turns away from My remembrance -- indeed, he will have a depressed life.}[Quran 20:124]

Maryam from birth to puberty

{…And We made her and her son a sign for the worlds.} [Quran 21:91]

The life of the Spirit, Word and Messenger of Allaah The Almighty, and the last Prophet to the Children of Israel – ‘Eesa (Jesus) – and his mother Maryam (Mary), the daughter of ‘Imraan, may Allaah exalt their mention, consisted of a series of trials. It came to be a model of abstinence from this world and longing for what is with Allaah The Almighty [in the Hereafter].
As for Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, she was selected by Allaah The Almighty over all women on earth, as He Says (what means): {And [mention] when the angels said, "O Maryam, indeed Allaah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.} [Quran 3:42]

On the same note, the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, remarked:"Many among men have attained perfection, but among women, none have, save Maryam, the daughter of ‘Imraan, and Khadeejah Bint Khuwaylid."

The Female Infant whose Mother Hoped to Give Birth to a Son
The first trial young Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, faced, was being born to a woman, who had wishe to be endowed with a son whom she could offer in service ofBayt Al-Maqdis (the Sacred House) [in Jerusalem]. Since Maryam’s mother, the wife of ‘Imraan, knew that a girl could not fulfill said duty like a male child, she was filled with remorse [at her birth] and apologized to the Lord. Allaah The Almighty narrates this, Saying (what means): {"My Lord, I have delivered a female." And Allaah was most knowing of what she delivered, "And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allaah ]."} [Quran 3:36] Earlier, she had made a vow to Allaah The Almighty: {"My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service]} [Quran 3:35]; and, it had to be fulfilled somehow.
So, Allaah The Almighty accepted it [of her] and made it an oath that is unsurpassed in the blessings it had. This is so, for its fruits were the greatest woman of the worlds and her son, one of the Messengers of determination, whose birth, life, ascent to heaven and return to earth towards the end of time, and miracles granted to him by Allaah The Almighty, were among His greatest signs. What vow, then, could possibly be greater than that?

Maryam, the Orphan in the House of Allaah
Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, was born without a father, so Allaah The Almighty sheltered her in the care of her maternal aunt, who was like a mother, and her husband, Zakariyya (Zechariah), may Allaah exalt his mention, the Prophet of his people. This was out of His mercy and kindness that He bestowed upon her, may Allaah exalt her mention; He Says (what means): {So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zakariyya.} [Quran 3:37]

While growing up, the mosque was the house of Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, where she lived in seclusion. Out of His compassion, Allaah the Almighty decreed that her sustenance be brought to her from the world of the unseen. Every time her aunt's husband entered her room, he found those provisions with her. Since he was her guardian, he would wonder how she could have anything that he himself did not bring. Allaah The Almighty narrates, Saying (what means), {He said, "O Maryam, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allaah. Indeed, Allaah provides for whom He wills without account."} [Quran 3:37] She did not live in a garden [of Eden here] before actually living in Paradise [in the Hereafter]; rather, this was [like] the nourishment bestowed by Allaah The Almighty upon His allies and worshippers, if they are experiencing hardship and difficulty, in order to remind them that He never neglects those who are close to Him.

This was similar to the story of Haajar (Hagar) and her son Ismaa‘eel (Ishmael), may Allaah exalt their mention, when He caused the spring of Zamzam to gush forth for them with an endless supply of fresh water, after Ibraaheem (Abraham), may Allaah exalt his mention, had left them in an arid desert.

Khubayb Ibn ‘Adiyy, may Allaah be pleased with him, the Companion of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was also honored likewise, when the disbelievers imprisoned him, with the intent to kill him. Suddenly, they discovered a bunch of grapes with him, when there was not a single grape in all of Makkah, due to it being out of season.

That Allaah The Almighty showers from the realm of the unseen, sustenance upon His allies and worshippers in this World, is by virtue of His kindness towards them and a demonstration of His miracles. How many a time did water spring forth from between the fingers of the Seal of Prophets, Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdullaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam?! How many times did His blessings through him increase the food, such as when a five-person meal fed an entire army of 800 men, who ate their fill of meat andThareed (bread soaked in soup), from a single baby goat and one Saa’ (unit of measurement) of barley that does not normally suffice even five people.
Maryam and the Dreams of a Girl
Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, who was pledged in service to the House of Allaah The Almighty, and who lived in a prayer chamber inside it away from people, did not have the same longings as an ordinary girl. Thus, she did not dream of a desirable husband, a mirror and a box of make-up; rather, her reveries and hopes revolved around obedience to Allaah The Almighty and His worship of Him. That is because, [at a very young age], she had received the following command from Allaah The Almighty, Who Says (what means): {"O Maryam, indeed Allaah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds. O Maryam, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."} [Quran 3:42-43]
Therefore, Maryam, may Allaah exalt her mention, grew up a pious girl, secluded in the mosque; she gave life to her night with supplication, worship and prayer; and invigorated her days with fasting and living life for the next.

Brilliant Examples from the History of Muslim Women

Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

·        {O you who have believed, fear Allaah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].} [Quran 3:102]
·        {O you who have believed, fear Allaah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allaah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.}[Quran 33:71]

A regrettable problem has surfaced in our societies, and scholars are receiving complaints from righteous women about the trouble they are facing in their commununities. Who is troubling our sisters? Jews? Christians? Secularists? No, unfortunately, these provocations are from some Muslims, may Allaah The Almighty guide us all.

This problem is not widespread so far, but one worries that it might escalate to an extent that we will not be able to treat it. Thus, it is best to tell those who criticize righteous sisters: When you criticize righteous sisters, you are criticizing the Sunnah(tradition) of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

When you criticize a certain person, the criticism is not directed to the person himself, but to the methodology that he adopts. Such conduct could be quite serious because some of the criticism or mockery may be regarded as disbelief in Allaah The Almighty Who Says (what means): {Say, "Is it Allaah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?" Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after your belief.} [Quran 9:65, 66]

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “A man may heedlessly utter a word that angers Allaah with him, which makes him fall in Hell for seventy years.”[At-Tirmithi, Ibn Maajah and Ahmad]

Such conduct has serious repercussions not just for the observant Muslim woman alone, but for the person who mocks her as well, because it may lead to the loss of their religion if they do not turn to Allaah The Almighty in repentance.

Being observant and religious is the right thing to do, whereas religious non-observance and mocking observant people is extremism and deviation.

Women in the Quran and Sunnah (tradition)

The best and most brilliant examples of Muslim women are the women who are mentioned in the Quran and the Sunnah (tradition). We may know about them, but let us contemplate these great examples.

Many Soorahs (chapters) in the Quran have names that are related to women. One of the longest Soorahs of the Quran is Soorat An-Nisaa’ (The Women). Another Soorah isAl-Mujaadilah (She that Disputes/ The Pleading Woman), Maryam (Mary) and Al-Mumtahinah (Examining her).

There are numerous verses that deal with women. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

·        {And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another.}[Quran 3:195]
·        {The believing men and believing women are allies of one another.} [Quran 9:71]
·        {Would substitute for him wives better than you - submitting [to Allaah ], believing, devoutly obedient, repentant, worshipping, and traveling - [ones] previously married and virgins.}[Quran 66:5]
·        {For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned.}[Quran 4:32]
·        {So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence.} [Quran 4:34]

There are also many other verses and stories in the Quran about issues concerning women, but I will only refer to some of them.

In Soorat Al-Ahzaab, there are the verses that refer to the wives and daughters of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. and the believing women. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {O wives of the Prophet..}[Quran 33:32]

Moreover, the story of Maryam (Mary), may Allaah exalt her mention, was mentioned in more than one Soorah of the Quran. The story of the mother of Prophet Moosa (Moses), may Allaah exalt his mention, was mentioned in Soorat Al-Qasas. The story of the Ifk (falsehood) incident was mentioned in Soorat An-Noor. This story is considered to be a declaration of the innocence of ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, and of virtuous Muslim women.

The incident of the Ifk (falsehood) is related to what I have mentioned earlier, because observant women may encounter similar harm from hypocrites and deviant people, so they should be ready to face it. If women assume that they will be saved from a trial like this, it must be remembered that ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, would have been worthier of being safe from such slander.

A long time ago, I saw a shameful cartoon in a newspaper in Kuwait and I thought to myself that the Kuwaiti press had gone beyond the bounds of propriety and had taken too much liberty. Perhaps such actions could be to blame for what befell Kuwait.

Some years ago, when young women who attended the University of Kuwait began adhering to the Islamic dress code, by putting on Hijaab (Islamic covering), the Kuwaiti press expressed annoyance. The press launched campaigns against religiously observant Muslim women. As part of the campaign, the famous cartoonist, Nagi Al-Ali, who later faced his doom when he was shot dead in Britain, drew a cartoon of a young woman in Hijaab with a strand of hair on her chest, being asked by another young woman, who did not cover up, whose beard hair that was.

This cartoon slandered women in Hijaab and accused them of having unlawful relationships with men with beards. The cartoon mocked religiously observant men and women. The cartoonist in question has already received his punishment in the worldly life and will be reckoned by Allaah The Almighty, The Just for what he did.

The incident of the Ifk (falsehood) shook the house of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, to the extent that some of the Companions, may Allaah be pleased with them, thought ill of ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, until Allaah The Almighty declared her innocence. Let me advise Muslim women who are attacked and falsely accused of wrongdoing to be patient just like ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her.

The wife of Fir‘awn (Pharaoh), was a believing woman who observed patience. This woman is mentioned in Soorat At-Tahreem.

Also, the wife of Ibraaheem (Abraham), may Allaah exalt his mention, was mentioned in more than one Soorah.

Another story is that of the Queen of Saba’ (Sheba) which was mentioned in Soorat An-Naml. A poet composed poems about this queen saying that if all women were like this queen, women would be superior to men. It is worth mentioning that this queen was a wise woman even before she became a Muslim. As a ruler, she was never a dictator, but she used to consult her eminent helpers. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {I would not decide a matter until you witness [for] me.}[Quran 27:32] She was not too proud to believe; because she had a sound mind and thanks to the grace of Allaah The Almighty, she was guided to believe in Prophet Sulaymaan (Solomon), may Allaah exalt his mention.

This story should be contemplated over, as it contains many lessons that have been pointed out by scholars and exegetes.

Women in the Sunnah

There are many Hadeeths of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that deal with women. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:

·        “Be advised to be good to women.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]
·        “Be gentle to women.”

Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said, 'A man came to the Messenger of Allaah and asked him, “Who is most entitled to my best companionship?”The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Your mother.” The man said, “Who is next?”The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Your mother.” The man further asked, “Who is next?” The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Your mother.” The man asked for the fourth time, “Who is next?” The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said:“Your father.”  [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to allocate some time to answering women’s questions and to help them to solve their problems.

One of the brilliant examples of women is that of the two women from Al-Ansaar who participated in the pledge of Al-‘Aqabah, despite the arduous circumstances. This proves that women can be brave and that they can fulfill important roles in certain situations.

Women in the past also participated in Jihaad and we can recall the story of Umm ‘Atiyyah, may Allaah be pleased with her, who participated in seven battles with the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. She used to treat the injured, serve the fighters and guard their belongings. (The issue of the permissibility of working as a nurse needs further discussion, as scholars have stated certain conditions for this, but this is not the suitable context to discuss this issue.)

Thus, the status of women in the Sunnah is clear and one need not talk about it at length.

The Wife of Two Martyrs: Umm Hakeem (May ALLAH Pleased with her)

On the day of the Battle of Uhud, she was fighting against Islam and Muslims; and on the day of the Battle of Yarmook, she was fighting against disbelief and disbelievers. Umm Hakeem, may Allaah be pleased with her, embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, but her husband, ‘Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, did not; he fled Makkah to Yemen after he heard that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had made his death lawful.
Umm Hakeem, may Allaah be pleased with her, went early in the morning to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and asked him to grant amnesty to her husband, and, sympathizing with her, he permitted her to catch up with him and give him the glad tidings of pardon. She set out in his pursuit and caught up with him at the coast of Tihaamah when he was about to sail to Yemen.

She shed tears and said to him,

"O son of my paternal uncle! I have come (with good news) from the best of the people, and the keenest to maintain good relations with people. Do not ruin yourself after I have sought safety from the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, for you, and he granted you safety." He said, "Have you really done so?" She said, "Yes, I talked to him about you and he granted you safety."

'Ikrimah, may Allaah be pleased with him, returned with her and they went to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and when they reached the gate of the mosque, she quickened her pace and entered and sought permission from the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and when he admitted them, ‘Ikrimah, may Allaah be pleased with him, proceeded and gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, for Islam and Jihaad (struggle).

She is Umm Hakeem bint Al-Haarith, may Allaah be pleased with her, a woman who showed incomparable loyalty to her husband. She was keen on his best interests. She fully understood her husband’s character and used her good offices with the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, to seek safety for him, and the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, granted him safety.

In this way, she caused her husband to embrace Islam and be steadfast in his faith and fight in the way of Allaah The Almighty until he was endowed with martyrdom in the Battle of Ajnaadeen.

After him, Umm Hakeem, may Allaah be pleased with her, married the glorious Companion, Khaalid ibn Sa‘eed ibn Al-‘Aas, may Allaah be pleased with him. Before he consummated his marriage with her, the caller for Jihaad made a public announcement to the Muslims to prepare to fight the Romans. But, Khaalid, may Allaah be pleased with him, foresaw that he would be killed in the battle on the coming day; and the believer's foresight could hardly err, for he sees with the light of Allaah The Almighty.

He expressed to her his wish to consummate their marriage, and she said to him, "Will you not postpone it until those (the Romans) gathering are defeated?" He said, "I think I will be killed [in battle]." She said, "Then, you may do so." He then consummated marriage with her near the bridge later known as the Bridge of Umm Hakeem, and in the morning, a wedding banquet was prepared for them. They had barely started their food before the Romans attacked, and fighting broke out and Khaalid, may Allaah be pleased with him, was killed in the battle before her eyes.

On seeing her husband dead, Umm Hakeem, may Allaah be pleased with her, put on her garment and proceeded to fight in support of the cause of Allaah The Almighty and to avenge the deaths of her husbands, ‘Ikrimah and Khaalid, may Allaah be pleased with them, and all the Muslims who were killed. She was able to kill seven Romans, with the pillar of the tent in which Khaalid, may Allaah be pleased with him, consummated their marriage. Even after that, she continued her struggle in serving Islam and deserves to have her life recorded in history books with letters of light. May Allaah be pleased with her, and please her.
