Youth and Music

Music is one of the means of entertainment that young people are interested in and spend time.  Our religion, which has introduced criteria and limits to all of our attitudes, has introduced the best and most appropriate criteria regarding music.

The view of wisdom which evaluates every sound in the universe as the melody of divine music will definitely view music that man produces through his efforts from the viewpoint of Allah and the hereafter.
From this point of view, we can divide music into two categories:
The first one is the music that expresses lofty and spiritual meanings and that gives man lofty joy and otherworldly blues; it is permissible.
The second one is the music that expresses lustful and worldly feelings that provoke sensual desires and brings about painful sorrow; it is haram.
They are evaluated based on the effect they have on a person.
The lyrics of a song must not contradict the basic principles of Islam. The Prophet (pbuh) said, "The poem that deals with illegitimate issues and unbelief is the melody of Satan." (Jamius-Saghir: 1609) Therefore, the lyrics of a song must have pure words and lofty meanings; they must not be immoral and contrary to the principles of belief and they must not be mean.
The following hadith of the Prophet must be a criterion for us regarding music:
"The money that a woman singer receives is haram. It is haram for her to sing. It is haram to watch her. The money she earns is like the money received in return for selling a dog. The money received in return for selling dogs is haram. A person who eats haram deserves to go to Hell." (Tabarani, Kabir)
"When female singers and musicians become abundant in the ummah and alcohol is consumed a lot, sinking into the ground and transforming into animals will take place and stones will rain." (Tirmidhi, Fitan: 21)
Music is a very strong and common means of spreading all kinds of thoughts and messages. People accept the ideas that are propagated through music more easily and readily. This way, positive or negative understanding of ethics, attitudes and lifestyle can be settled.
Therefore, people who listen to some kinds of music regularly become influenced by some negative ideas and act without noticing.
Therefore, our young people should be very careful about what they listen to and they should select carefully what they listen to.
Another important point is that it is necessary not to listen to too much music and not to spend too much time. It is a major sin to keep listening to music at the expense of delaying our important tasks and worship.
What should the attitude of a young person who heeds the warnings of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) be toward music?
What kind of a way should a young person follow so that he will be saved from committing haram and that he will satisfy his music pleasures and needs?
To this end, we should protect ourselves against negative music at first. We should keep away from the kinds of music that do not comply with the criteria mentioned above and the worthless, mean music in the market.
We should it prefer our own music.
The best music is reciting the Quran and listening to it.
Along with the Quran, hymns, chants, religious songs and positive songs, which are abundant, can meet our music needs.
There have been successful works and positive pieces of music recently. In a sense, the young people of today are luckier than the young people in the past. There was not much music to listen to but a few hymns and mehter (janissary band) music 10-20 years ago. Today, we have thousands of some really elaborate nice pieces of professional music.
Our young people should act knowing that they will be accounted for every moment they spend and that they will be responsible for all kinds of music performed by the tongue, hand and ear, and the music that is listened.
As it is the case with everything, the best music is the music performed within legitimate boundaries.
